I tried posting about this in vcu, but it seems that though they are completely content to be a dumping ground for random questions and gripes about VCU, they are not okay with posts about activism that is happening both on campus and around the country.

Regardless, today, April 18, 2007 is a Day of Silence being observed by people all over the country, including many students at VCU.

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

What are you going to do to end the silence?

Just 3 hours from Richmond! There's a Marriott right next door!

First of all, my apologies, as this community has been neglected on my part and underutilized since its inception.  Hopefully, that will start to change.  I'm glad to see that some of you have been taking advantage of the support of other members.  I just wanted to take a moment to provide you with a few GLBT resources around Richmond (please feel free to add to this list):

Richmond Organization for Sexual Minority Youth (ROSMY)
ROSMY provides support and education to youth ages 14-20 through meetings and other social activities.  The group has recently seen some changes in leadership and has recently added meetings totaling to five nights per week.  Expect more activity from ROSMY in the coming months.

Richmond Triangle Players
Local theater group formed in 1993.

Richmond.com's Gay/Lesbian Guide
Provides an overview of area nightlife.

GLSEN Richmond
Richmond chapter of Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network.

Diversity Thrift
Thrift store operated under the Richmond Gay Community Foundation.  Recently opened relocated to Sherwood Avenue (off Boulevard) with plans to renovate a portion of the building into a community center.

Metropolitan Community Church
Serving Richmond's GLBT community through outreach programs and worship.

Fan Free Clinic
Local free clinic that provides an array of medical and social services to Richmonders.  Works with community through AIDS/HIV outreach and preventative education.

Anyone want to make money this weekend? I'm helping campaign for Brad Blanton running for the 7th district house seat. He's paying $1 per signature to get his ballot petition signed. It's easy to do, and can be fun if you have more than one person. Contact me at 703-509-9171 or sammyiam at gmail dot com. Volunteers are Welcome & preferred!!! for more info on Brad, see www.blantonforcongress.com or www.radicalhonesty.com
